My early musical experience was, as most folks of my generation, singing in a school choir. Though I am from a family with a long lineage of classical musicians, In the 1970's I was drawn by the "message & melody" of artists like James Taylor, Jackson Brown, and Bonnie Raite.
While still in highschool, I taught myself to play guitar so I could write songs for a music theory class I was taking. And in college (University of Vermont) I began playing "on the street", in clubs, and in coffee houses. For a while, I played with a celtic band ("Feast or Famine"), but mostly did "solo" gigs where I could find them. It was also during this period that my friend, Laurie Hare began introducing me to several other songwriters, among them, her (then) boyfriend, Danny O'Keefe.
In 1980 I moved to Durango, CO where I taught at a private highschool, but supplimented my income with music. Some of my musical friends were in a bluegrass band called "the Animas Valley Boys" and I frequented the Telluride Bluegrass Festivals during the years when you could still buy a ticket on the day of the show. I was "hooked" on bluegrass, but still a "folkie". I even cut an album (actually a cassette tape) of songs titled "Soaring". I still have a few copies laying around somewhere. I use them as paperweights. But one song, "Laura" did bring in a royalty check....I think it was a whopping $7.50.
1984 saw me moving to Ft. Collins, CO for graduate school. My wife introduced me to Julie Hoest, a singer-songwriter of incredible talent. We occaisionally performed together as a duo. In 1988 another move to Pocatello, ID, (more graduate school) found me performing with a bluegrass band called "The Sawtooth String Band".
In 1990 I moved to Jackson, WY where I found great musical company in folks like Tom Rush (a neighbor at the time), "Loose Ties" (including Phil Round and Ben Winship), and Anne & Pete Sibley. I helped to re-start the famed "Jackson Hole Hootenanny" with Dick Barker, Bill Briggs, and John Cooke; and performed there often.
A long hiatus from serious music from 1994-2006, was because I was too busy singing lullabies to my three children.
In 2006 I moved briefly to Hailey, ID and began performing again. In 2008 I returned to Boulder, CO and have been forming a new bluegrass band with long-time friend and mandolin player, Lars Waldner. The band now features Andrew Shoemaker (Bass & Mandolin) and Jamie Maynard (Banjo & Guitar). We were having some trouble coming up with a name for the band. "Nasal Ridge Pickers" or "The Deviated Septums" did not meet with much support from our fans especially our wives. So we settled for LOST ANGEL STATION after the location of our first "official" gig, the sugarloaf community picnic held at the fire station on Lost Angel Road.
